GPS Running Watches – A Sports Training Toolbox, A Worthy Investement In Your Fitness Future   by Rod McAnally

In our modern world, watches have many uses other than just being able to tell the time and in the world of running and jogging, technology has allowed the basic sports watch to receive new technology to goes well beyond the basic stop watch feature with the ability to store laps. There are many multi-featured running watches around on the market for athletes to use to improve their levels of performance and fitness. A major advancement was the heart rate monitor chest strap of the 70’s, but in modern times, the emergence of GPS running watches has introduced a new set of training tool for runners to take advantage of.

The advantage of GPS watches for runners over other types of watches is the ability to accurately measure your speed and distance. By linking to GPS satellite signals, your precise location on the planet can be calculated and used to provide a whole suite of fitness training and analytical tools. With the benefit of speed and distance measurements at its disposal, using a running GPS watch, athletes can set up pace alerts that enable them to stay on track when running in a competitive event. When a runner starts to slow their pace, their GPS running watch can alert them that they are slacking off and need to up their tempo.

One of the most effective training session methods are interval reps, that vary between hard efforts and easy recovery periods. Many running GPS watches, provide tools that can handle these sessions automatically, and can base intervals on distance in place of time. The Auto-Lap feature offered in a GPS running watch can automate the recording of individual laps, allowing a runner to perform their training sessions without the worry about when to press the LAP button.

Another handy feature that GPS watches offer runners is the ability to record their courses in memory. Most GPS running watches provide you with the ability to transfer your training data to computer, so as to allow you to view your course on a mapping software package such as Google Earth. Other GPS watches have navigation features that allow you to mark waypoints at a particular location. There are also watch models like the Garmin Forerunner 305 that feature a large display screen and can allow you to view your current position on a map.
